Cinema LED screen is usually larger than an 85-inch TV. How much larger? It depends on the size of the cinema. What is the world average? Usually, the standard cinema screen has a width of 8 meters and a height of 6 meters.
Larger cinema screens: Some large theaters or special format screening halls have even larger screens. For example, the standard IMAX screen is 22 meters wide and 16 meters high. The size of cinema screens is often measured in diagonal inches. Other special cinema LED screens: For example, the screen of the China National Film Museum is 21 meters high and 27 meters wide.
1. Is the viewing effect better with a larger Cinema LED screen?
Advantages of a large screen
Stronger immersion: When the screen size increases, the audience’s field of vision is more easily covered by the picture. For example, when watching a grand science fiction movie like “Interstellar”, the huge black holes and vast cosmic scenes on the large screen can make the audience feel as if they are in the universe and have a sense of being on the scene. The audience’s attention will be more concentrated on the movie plot and picture details, enhancing the sense of immersion in watching the movie.
Better display of details: A large screen can better display the details of the movie. For some beautifully shot movies, such as ancient costume historical films, the details of the characters’ clothing textures, the carved beams and painted pillars of the buildings and other details can be presented more clearly on the cinema screen. The scene layout, color matching and other elements carefully designed by the director can also be more completely appreciated by the audience, allowing the audience to better appreciate the excellence of movie production.
Greater visual impact: When watching action movies or disaster movies, the advantages of a big cinema LED screen are particularly obvious. Take the “Fast and Furious” series as an example, the exciting scenes such as car racing and explosions in the movie can produce a stronger visual impact on the large screen. The pictures of fast-moving vehicles and flying debris can make the audience’s senses more strongly stimulated, so that the audience can more immerse themselves in the tense atmosphere of the film.
2. Other factors affecting the viewing effect
Seat position and viewing angle: Even if the screen is very large, if the audience’s seat position is not good, the viewing effect will be greatly reduced. For example, sitting too close to the front, the audience may need to turn their heads frequently to see the whole screen, and will feel the picture deformed and visually fatigued; sitting too close to the side, there will be a problem of inclined viewing angle, and it is impossible to fully and directly appreciate the picture. The ideal seat position should be in the middle of the theater, and the line of sight should be basically level with the center of the screen, so as to ensure a better viewing angle.
Picture quality: The size of the Cinema LED screen is only one aspect, and factors such as the resolution, contrast, brightness and color accuracy of the picture are equally important. If the screen is very large but the picture resolution is very low, the image will appear blurred and the graininess will be serious. For example, when an old movie with low resolution is played on a large screen, its picture quality defects may be magnified. However, a picture with high resolution, high contrast and accurate color reproduction can present a very good visual effect even on a relatively small cinema screen.
Sound effect: The movie viewing experience is a combination of sight and sound. A good sound effect can cooperate with the picture and enhance the atmosphere. In a screening hall with a large screen, if the quality of the sound system is poor, the sound is fuzzy, the volume is insufficient or the channel balance is out of order, then the viewing effect will not be good. For example, when watching a suspense movie, the tense background music and environmental sound effects need to be conveyed through a good sound system so that the audience can truly feel the tense and exciting atmosphere.
3. Size selection of cinema LED screen
Adaptation to the theater space
The actual space size of the theater is the key factor determining the size of the LED screen. The width of the cinema LED screen generally should not exceed 0.8 times the net width of the theater. For example, if the width of the theater is 20 meters, the screen width had better be controlled within 16 meters. At the same time, the screen height should ensure that there is enough space between the ceiling of the theater and the top of the screen for installing relevant equipment, such as sound systems, ventilation equipment, etc. And the bottom of the LED cinema screen should also be at an appropriate distance from the ground, usually higher than the heads of the front row audience by a certain distance to avoid sight obstruction.
The seat layout also has an important influence on the size of the cinema LED screen. The distance from the last row of seats to the screen should be about 4 – 6 times the height of the screen. For example, if the screen height is 6 meters, the distance between the last row and the screen had better be between 24 and 36 meters, so that the rear audience can also clearly see the picture details and the picture will not become blurred or too small because of the long distance.
